Johnny Russo - and his many friends, who once made up a sizable portion of the Ithaca music scene, here present a delicious ensemble of songs. "Only Just a Dream" was Russo's first album, and the music is a genial, foot-tapping celebration of the joys and woes - mostly joys - of life in Ithaca - Here's the street scene - loves won and loves lost - happy and nostalgic memories of various local taverns - just listen to the bravado of "College Ave. Strut" , or the funky "Aurora Street Blues", or "Bernie's Cayuga Street Shuffle". All the watering holes are covered, ending up at the Rongovian Embassy, with "Rongo Rag". People may have once shuffled off to Buffalo but the real shuffle was happening down Buffalo Street Hill in Ithaca.
It has been said - too many times, possibly - that Ithaca is gorges. Well, there is even a great song about Taughannock Falls - the Native American paced anthem, "Tiganigovia".
Russo, a fixture in the Ithaca jazz scene, is an accomplished trombonist and pianist. He is ably backed by a cadre of excellent musicians, including Jeff Dowd, Brian Earle, Mike Shaw, and Michael Wellin among others. Johnny shares the spotlight, vocal- wise and we are treated to the smokey voice of Suzanne Stewart Jones on the song, "Lover Man"; the uber-talented Annie Burns sings "Movin' On" (a song by Russo - as a matter of fact, all the songs are by Russo except for "Lover Man" and "As Time Goes By"); other songs are sung by Dave Kent ("Aurora St. Blues"), Chris Dillon ( College Ave. Strut"); Bernie Milton ("Bernie's Cayuga St. Shuffle"); and Alex Brooks ("As Time Goes By").
